American English VS British English

British English and American English may technically both be english, but they do have their differences. They can vary depending on certain words or phrases. Some words are easy to decipher upon hearing, whereas others we’re left with no clue as to their meaning.

Whether you’re an American traveling to Great Britain or vice versa it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with these variations so you can communicate clearly and effectively.

Use the cheat sheet below to overview some of the most common word variations you may come across. Some you may have heard of and others may be a surprise.

Please note this sheet does not cover spelling variations such as “color vs. colour.” That will be covered in a future lesson!
